Setting Up A Bank Account

Destination: South Africa

Bank Card

Whilst working in South Africa, you will need a bank account in your name to receive your weekly earnings. As noted above you could aim to set up your South African bank account from your own country but they are relatively easy to open once you arrive.

When opening a bank account you will be required to:

  • Declare all the funds you plan to bring into the country and any foreign assets you possess.

  • Complete the Foreign National Declaration and Confirmation of Employment by a South African Employer forms.

  • Give a written undertaking that you will not place your foreign assets at the disposal of a third party normally resident in South Africa.

  • Provide the bank with certified copies of the following: Your valid passport. Work or study permit. Proof of address in South Africa (e.g. telephone or utility bill). Copies of recent bank statements from your bank in your home country. A reference from your bank in your home country will always provide solid evidence of your banking history but this is optional.

Most South African banks and their Automatic Teller Machines (ATM’s) recognise international bankcards provided they have an international symbol on it (such as Cirrus or Visa). This will allow you to readily access your accounts and funds in most locations. We advise you check with your ‘home’ bank that you have access to international and Internet banking processes before your departure.
